The article discusses ways to improve the success of graduate students' preparation for defending their dissertations in Russia and other leading countries. It highlights the most common forms of scientific training and the specific features of graduate education in different countries, including Russia, Australia, the United States, China, France, Germany, and South Korea. Statistical data on the decline in the number of PhD theses defended in Russia over the past two decades is presented. General requirements for applicants to graduate school are identified, as well as the individual achievements of students from Bryansk State Technical University over three study periods. The paper presents a scheme for the subordination of structural divisions within the university, which contributes to the success of postgraduate student preparation for dissertation defense. Various types of publishing activity are analyzed, and a modified methodology for evaluating the success of graduate students in higher education is proposed. It is shown that the quality of recruiting and graduating graduate students is largely determined by the responsibilities of scientific supervisors and the coordination of interactions between university departments. Ways to implement the involvement of graduate students in implementing the concept of teacher training for the educational system are outlined.
