THE MULTIFACETED UNIVERSITY IN THE WORKS OF MIGUEL DE UNAMUNO: BETWEEN THE PAST AND THE PRESENT

Miguel de Unamuno y Jugo (1864–1936) – a Spanish philosopher, writer, lecturer and rector of the University of Salamanca – was one of the key figures of the late XIX – early XX century. He has attracted and continues to attract researchers by the originality of his artistic and philosophical expression of views on the political and intellectual life of Spain of his time. Unamuno's pedagogical ideas, particularly those focused on improving higher education, have rarely been the subject of study. Nevertheless, they are original not only in content, but also in the form of presentation, since Unamuno preferred to give metaphorical definitions when discussing the problems that defined the state of higher education. His concept for the development of higher education in Spain was based on the idea that the university should work as a healthy living «organism» and cease to be a «factory of graduates», a repository of «ready-made science» or a «temple of routine and revelry». Unamuno’s pedagogical metaphors represent not only a significant conceptual framework for the history of pedagogy but also a unique methodological toolkit that can be applied to the study of modern universities.
