The authors explore the significant role of a higher education institution in maintaining and fostering the cultural identity of students from diasporas and national communities in Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. On the example of Astrakhan Tatishchev State University, this study examines a range of educational initiatives undertaken by the university on its own and in collaboration with national societies to strengthen students’ connection with their cultural heritage. The authors analyze various educational approaches and techniques employed by the university. Special attention is given to adaptation programs within student interest groups that facilitate intercultural dialogue and interaction, contributing to the integration of students into the learning environment of a multicultural region. The article emphasizes the significance of students' active involvement in the development and execution of projects that aim to preserve and promote national traditions and customs. This enables students not only to enhance their cultural identity but also to cultivate leadership skills, soft skills, and working in a team. The study draws on empirical data gathered through interviews and a review of event reports. The findings of the study indicate that the educative initiatives of Astrakhan Tatishchev State University contribute to fostering students' respect for their cultural heritage, as well as stimulating their interest in learning more about the cultural traditions of other nations. In conclusion, the authors argue that it is essential to further develop and sustain educational programs that preserve cultural memory among students while emphasizing the significance of intercultural exchange amidst the risk of interethnic conflicts.
