The article presents an analysis of the theoretical and methodological foundations for training specialists in helping professions through a historical retrospective of the evolution of the gerontological paradigm toward the social activity of elderly citizens. Various approaches to the competence structure of specialists in the socionomic field with focus on supporting the elderly in enhancing their active longevity are considered. The article presents data on the regional demographic situation and on the readiness of specialists in helping professions to work with the elderly and enhance active longevity as a complex of supra-professional flexible skills (soft skills), including its criteria, assessment methods, and diagnostic results. A qualitative description of the levels of these competencies is provided. The article also features an analysis of data from an experimental study on the regional situation aimed at examining the readiness of social sector specialists to work with the elderly and motivate them to lead a lifestyle that enhances active longevity. 163 employees of the Astrakhan State Autonomous Institution «Astrakhan Nursing Home for the Elderly and Disabled» and the Multifunctional Center for Social Services for the Elderly and Disabled «Sodeystviye» took part in the study, including doctors, nurses, social workers, specialists in adaptive physical education and occupational therapy, psychologists. The average age of the participants was 34 years. The majority had secondary vocational education. The authors conclude that in order to achieve the strategic goals related to maintaining an active lifestyle among the elderly a modernization of methods of vocational education and a revision of conceptual approaches to the development of trainings programs for socionomic specialists in the system of supplementary education are needed. The changes are to be made with consideration to the prospective demand for specialists and to the individual needs for professional self-determination and self-realization.
