The article deals with the topical issues of implementing the project-based method of teaching natural sciences. The significance of the issues under study is proved by arguments in terms of the requirements of current legislation in education, as well as in terms of the needs of modern Russian economy for technological development, which implies improving the quality of education, primarily in the context of natural science disciplines (chemistry, geology, physics, biology). To provide a comprehensive consideration of students' project-based learning at the lessons of natural sciences, the authors summarize scientific approaches to understanding the essence of the term «project activity», clarify the concepts of «natural science education» and definitions of «project activity in natural science education». The main advantages of project-based learning at schools in mastering traditionally «difficult» disciplines of the natural science cycle are highlighted. The authors pay special attention to the theoretical and methodological aspects of designing students’ activities in chemistry and peculiarities of implementing project-based learning in high school. To assess the impact of project activities of high school students on the level of the development of their research skills a pedagogical experiment was conducted. All projects carried out by students were based on chemical experiments, which contributed to the development of research skills, creative thinking and interest in chemistry. Project activities with the use of chemical experiments make learning more entertaining and effective, helping students to better understand chemical processes and apply their knowledge in practice.

Key words: project activity; types of projects; peculiarities of project activity; science education; projects in science education
