The article theoretically and empirically substantiates the tendency to include patriotism as a personal quality in the composition of key determinants of competitiveness. The article reveals the grounds supporting this thesis, coming from the modern public agenda. It is reflected in the speeches of the country's leaders, real actions of the government; from the statements of public figures - representatives of culture, art, media communities; from the actual data of socio-economic life of the country, recorded in media publications, statistical reports, etc. The results of a survey of representatives of professional communities (namely, heads of a number of organisations and individual departments from the non-production sector of the economy) are presented. They demonstrate the recognition of patriotism and other moral civic qualities of a person as criteria for hiring new specialists, deciding on the issues of rewarding employees, promotion, etc. It is shown that state patriotism, civic responsibility, prosocial activity and similar personality characteristics are gradually included in the phenomena of organisational culture, professional ethics and, as a consequence, «ideal portraits» of specialists in a number of spheres of activity. The article defines the actual aims of educational practice and pedagogical science to ensure the proper level of work on the education of patriotism in the younger generation of Russians in accordance with the specifics of modern children, adolescents and young people, taking into account the specifics of the current state of socio-political life of the country and the target orientations of its development. The article formulates a number of preliminary directions of scientific research in this area, concerning potentially effective in the new conditions methods of education, educational theories and concepts, important areas of pedagogical activity. Their modernisation and implementation can become an effective mechanism for reviving the system of patriotic education in Russia. This aspect includes and characterises traditional methods of education (in particular, methods of teaching and coercion, encouragement and censure, including punishment), the concept of vitagenic education (extrapolation of its provisions, principles and techniques to the subject area of personal education), theoretical provisions of family education and the tasks of educational science and practice on its pedagogical support in accordance with the tasks of patriotic education of the younger generation.
