Peculiarities of applying innovative technology of project-based activity (PBA) in a modern university, as well as its results, advantages and disadvantages in comparison with traditional training are studied. The main directions of PBA are revealed. It is proved, that PBA as an innovative activity of a university, implemented in various directions, contributes to forming students’ competencies, skills and abilities necessary for future work. The authors have made a conclusion that PBA implemented by students enables development of new personal and professional qualities (students become initiative, determined and responsible). What is more students start to better understand academic and scientific problems, partnership relations with teachers and other students are formed in a learning process, a skill to defend one’s point of view develops. All that leads to increasing effectiveness of educational and scientific activity. The experience of using project-based methods for teaching students by lecturers of the Chair of Pedagogics, Psychology and Humanities and the Chair of Mathematics and Information Technologies at Znamensk Branch of Astrakhan Tatishchev State University is presented.
