DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE IN STUDENTS IN THE PROCESS OF TEACHING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE USING FAIRY TALES

The main purpose of teaching foreign languages is to develop communicative competences, listening, grammar, reading and speaking skills. Unfortunately, the latter is still considered to be a stumbling block for many teachers who either don’t know how to encourage their students to speak, or just don’t want to spend time on planning a lesson, or a range of lessons, on speaking skills development, understanding how complicated this work it. The article deals with various approaches to the problem of the development of a communicative competence, gives some definitions of the «communicative competence» concept. It also provides the definition of a fairy tale and draws attention to the main characteristics of this genre, which determine its usage at the practical English lessons for younger students of language departments. A number of advantages of using this particular genre by a teacher are revealed. They include the development of speaking, writing, listening, and, of course, grammar skills through a variety of exercises and assignments aimed at developing these skills, as well as the formation of moral and ethical qualities in students. The article gives some examples of how to implement fairy tales at the English lessons. Such a view will be of interest to specialists in the methodology of professional education, as well as the methodology of teaching English.
